Making your own sloppy Joes is as easy as browning your meat and then cooking everything together in one pot! It’s a quick dinner, yummy, and healthier than store-bought mix of course!
You can make this with either beef, deer, chicken, turkey, or whatever other ground meat you choose. It all works just lovely.
I will tell you one ingredient that makes it really tasty – Smoked Paprika. Get you some (unless you don’t like smokey flavors). Make sure it’s “smoked” though. Not just regular paprika. I use this spice in so many dishes, including making my own yummy BBQ seasoning.
My favorite brand buns to use: Martin’s, Pepperidge Farm, or Nature’s Own. You can also use slider buns, or make your own rolls using my Weeknight Dinner Bread recipe.
Using stewed tomatoes gives the mixture a special flavor and sweetness. Before starting, chop up the stewed tomatoes so they’re not so big. You can also use diced tomatoes, but I recommend adding a sweetener to it.
Brown your meat first, and then drain and rinse if you’d like.
Saute onions, bell pepper, and garlic (or use garlic powder).
Add the meat back to the pot, along with the rest of the ingredients, and cook until most of the liquid is cooked out (about 15 minutes).
FYI You’re really not supposed to use a black iron pot with tomato gravy because the acidity of the tomatoes can cause the iron taste to leach into the food.
